Getting Around
Crested Butte Travel Recommendations
Crested Butte & the Gunnison Valley have a great FREE public transportation system. While none of the buses will bring you to our event locations, they can bring you all around town, to CB South, Gunnison, and even close to our Headquarters. ( Our Headquarters is just a block-and-a-half east of the 4-way stop)! Travel Crested Butte has a great page with all the bus schedules here.
Flying is the easiest and fastest way to get to the Gunnison Valley. The newly remodeled Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC), located in Gunnison, is the closest airport to Crested Butte. Catch a convenient, nonstop flight to Gunnison-Crested Butte from Denver, Texas or Chicago (new!). Flights are available year-round. This site is updated to reflect the current and upcoming season’s flights. Browse flights to and from Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport below.

Common Questions
Events Specific Travel Details
Festival Travel Policy
Attendees are required to provide their own transportation for Festival events unless specifically stated under the event description in the the Program Guide. Most cars will be able to get you to the trailheads (our special off-roading events will require a high clearance and 4-wheel drive, however), though if you are concerned, most classes enjoy carpooling. This is something worked out between guests and leaders after arriving to check in for your event. There are no Ubers or Lyfts in the Gunnison Valley.
Meeting Locations
The meeting location for classes/hikes will appear on the event registration page online as well as the confirmation email after the purchase of the events. Most events will meet at the Historic Train Depot – 716 Elk Avenue. This is our Festival Headquarters! It is about a two-and-a-half block walk from the town’s 4-way bus stop/ Visitor Center
Meeting Times
We ask that participants be at their class meeting location 15 minutes before the event starts. No need to check in before then!
When Meeting Times Are Outside Office Hours
For any classes that start before or after our operating hours, please consult your registration confirmation (emailed to you once you register for events) for your class’s meeting location **Sometimes, this location will be off-site, and we will provide a physical address.”
Events With Little or No Travel Logistics
Need an event close to town? These events will be perfect for you:
- Any of our Art classes
- Any of our Culinary & Medicinal classes except Medicinal Plants of the Mountains
- Historic Garden Tour
- Tour of Crested Butte Gardens
- Gardens & Ghosts Tours
Accessibility
- Older Bodies and Bodies with Walking/ Mobility Limitations: “All of our hiking & walking events except garden tours are on trails of some sort. If you do not regularly exercise off paved surfaces, are uncomfortable with uneven footing, are exercising at altitude, or are looking for access to restrooms and benches to stop and take breaks, this transition can be challenging and is something to keep in mind. For these cases, we recommend our “Tour of Crested Butte” or Lower Loop Trail, which can accommodate wheelchairs. For detailed information on more hikes in the area and to decide what hikes and amenities fit your needs, check out Travel Crested Butte’s Hiking Guide here!“
- Restrooms: “Most hikes will be at a pace where guests will be walking for at least an hour at a time before breaks. No food or beverages will be provided; everything is "Bring Your Own Lunch." There are not many restrooms available for most hikes; exceptions being the beginning of Swampy Pass, Oh-Be-Joyful, and Beaver Ponds. Hikes around Lake Irwin also have restrooms, though this depends on where the instructors take hikers. Our Headquarters and the 4-Way Stop both have public restrooms. Any of the following events also have restrooms easily accessible:
- Any of our Art classes
- Any of our Culinary & Medicinal classes except Medicinal Plants of the Mountains
- Historic Garden Tour
- Tour of Crested Butte Gardens
- Gardens & Ghosts Tours
- Kids: Generally, if an event is suitable for children under the age of 16, it is specified in the event description. Because our events are outdoors, at least a few hours long, and focus on wildflower identification, young children can easily become bored and often lack the stamina required to complete the hike. However, there are a couple of events that might work for younger children – “Tour of Crested Butte Gardens,” “Butterflies of BrushCreek,” and “Wildflower ID Walk,” all of which are easier to peel off from the group if needed. For hikes, we recommend “Woods Walk” (it is shady and has tree forts) and “Brush Creek” (very flowery and easy to walk, but can be hot and sunny as it sits on a southern slope). We also now have a free self-guided kids workbook called the “C-Bees Program” that folks can pick up at the Heritage Museum, Trailhead Children’s Museum, Festival Headquarters, and Visitor Center.
- Bodies from Sea Level: Most events take place at an altitude of 9,000-11,500 ft above sea level. Some people may experience being light-headed and/or a feeling of “being out of breath” when they first arrive in Crested Butte. This can make physical activity challenging so we recommend selecting hikes and walks within the beginner to intermediate levels. For more info on how to help yourself acclimate to the altitude, click our FAQ page here!
